CHECKING NEGATIVE INFLUENCES
1 Corinthian 5:9 -11 ::-
" when I wrote to you before,I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin
But I wasn't talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin,or are greedy or cheat people or worship idols.you would have to leave this world to avoid people like that.
I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer,yet indulges in sexual sin,,or is greedy,or worships idols,or is abusive ,or is a drunkards ,or cheats people.Don't even eat with such people"
Paul was refering to a first letter written to the Corinthians .it is called the lost letter ,because it has not been preserved..
In the letter Paul said Christians should not stay away from unbelievers
But should stay a way from believers that indulges in sin willingly
Last week we look at the topic " influence as a catalyst to good intentions.
Proverbs 27:17 says " iron sharpen iron and so do humans.
Failure to give good attention to our christian life ,leads to failure in life.1Corinthians 15:33 says " Don't be fooled by those who say such things ,for bad company currupts good manner"
To day we are looking at ways of check
ing negative influences ,controlling influence of evil.
2 Samuel 13 :1 -20
. Amnon desired his sister Tamar lustfully
.He asked for advice from his cousin and friend Jonadab
.He pretended to be sick and send for Tamar to cook for him
.He raped her and sent her out shamefully
.Absolom told her to keep it a secret,that its a family problem.( he later killed Am on a year later in response of what he did to his sister)
1, By advising them not to associate with bad friends.
Jonadab was a bad cousin and friend, he influences Am non to rape his sister tactically
He would have advice's him against his plan , if he good to Am on.but he influenced Am on negatively.
Our youth today are in serious need of mentorship , fatherly and motherly advice,
They are in need of thorough counseling ,attached with lo I g them not judging what they are doing.
2, in the story we saw love and lust(Am on was having lust for Tamar thinking its love)
The differences between love and lust are these ::-
Love is patient while lust wants it immediately
Love is kind while lust harsh
Love is selfless while lust is self centered
For more characteristics of love check 1 Corinthians 13.
Manybyouth today are filled with lust and are Deciever by love, why is that so?
1, Because they lack love from their homes
2, Because their hormones are driving them at that point
3, The spirits controlling a dormain ,about sexual immorality is influencing them
4,, youths are influenced by the cultures coming from the west(virginity I# no lover a cherish thing).
Through constant prayer for the youth, fasting for them and understand them.
Sometimes its not their fault,but influence of the background they came from (No proper teachings and training from the family, they are allowed access to the internet very young,and that affects them.
Parents should set limit to siblings relationship, that is , ::-
To prevent the sexual immorality between them (incest)
Limit touches between them sibling
Limit exposure between children and parents e.g mother and sons and daughter and father
B, DISCUSS 1 CORINTHIANS 5 :11 AS AN EFFECTIVE WAY OF CHECKING NEGETIVE INFLUENCE.
Paul is saying ::- Do not keep company with them or eat with then.especially those in the faith( believers) that are comfortable committing fornication, adultery ,covetousness, idolaters ,worldly people , drunkards , extortioners,bribery.
How can we stay away from such people in our society today?
As christian, we should tactically stay away from them and their influence.
Iron sharpens iron ,so do humans
Bad company corrupts good manner s
Though we are in the world ,we are not of the world,if we can not convert them we should stay away from them and their influences
Why Do We Need To Stay Away From Them?
1, Because such people harm the growth of other believers (mature and young) the quality of their Christianity is distorted
2, the church that allows such people is hardly a light to the world
3, the church leader must correct in love.for the sake of spiritual unity and growth of the church.
C, DISCUSS PRACTICAL WAYS OF AVOIDING QUERRELSOME AND UNREASONABLE DEBATE IN LIGHT OF TITUS 3:9- 10
Paul warns Titus just as he warns timothy ( 2 timothy 2 :14) Not to get involve in foolish and unreasonable arguments .
It doesn't mean we should not study ,discuss,examines , and study text( interprets and apply) ,but against arguments that will not lead us to wisdom.
What are Ways To Avoid Quarrelsome And unreasonable Debate?
A person bringing quarrelsome and debate, we should ::-
Avoid foolish argument with him
Warn people of the presence of such people in our midst
Directly warns him and warn him again
If he refuses to desist from his bad character ,have nothing to do with such person.
Let's watch out for them( Romans 16:17)
D, PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND OTHER METHODS THAT ARE CONTEMPORY IN CHECKING NEGETIVE INFLUENCES
Staying away from possible places where temptation will arise. Matthew 5 :29-30 says ::-
" So if your eye even your good eye,causes you to lust ,gouge it out and throw it away,it is better for you to loose part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown in Hell
And if your hand even your stronger hand ,causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.it is better to loose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown in hell"
Anger ,lust ,lie sexual immorality etc must be stayed awy from as Christians.
Never give up our hope is in Christ. Amen
Proverbs 13 :20 says ::-
" He that walketh with the wise men shall be wise ,but a co.Pa I on of the fool shall be destroyed.
Comtemporary examples are ::-
1, identify the sin in your life
2, Recognized your weaknesses
3, stay away from temptations
4 recogbnise their effect on our lives and run
5, we must live by faith
6, study the word of God and pray Amen
