| What the bible is saying about marriage and its pitfalls |
Genesis 2: 24
"That is why a man his father and mother and cleave to his wife and they become one flesh"
God gave marriage to Adam and eve as a gift. They were created perfect for each other ,marriage was not just for their convenience or brought about by culture, God himself created it .
The three basic aspect of marriage are ::-
1, The man leaves his parent and cleaves to his wife in a public act of promising himself to her.
2, the man and woman are joined together to take responsibility of each other
3, the two become one flesh in intimacy and commitment to sexual union that is reserved for marriage.
Strong christian marriage includes all these three(3) aspects of marriage.
" Then the lord God said ,it is not good for a man to be alone, I will make him a suitable companion to help him,.
So God took some soil from the ground and formed all the animal and all the birds. Then he brought them to the man to see how he would name them and that is how they all got their name.
So the man name all the birds and all the animals but one of them was a suitable companion to help him.
Then the lord God made the man to fall into a deep sleep , and while he was sleeping ,he took out one of the mans ribs and close it up with flesh.
He formed a woman out of the rib and brought her to him.
Then the man said , At last , here is one of my own kind, Bone taken out of my bone and flesh from my flesh., woman is her name because she was taken out of a man..
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife , and they become one."
God creative work was not complete until he made a woman, he could have made her from the dust of the ground as he made man. God chose however to make woman from mans flesh and bone.
It illustrate for us that in marriage man and woman symbolically becomes one.
Genesis 2 :18 says " the lord said , it is not good for man to be alone ,I will make him a help meet suitable"
God was the one that initiated marriage, And so marriage was his plan or idea.
WHY COMMITMENT IS ESSENTIAL FOR A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE
Genesis 24:48 - 50
" I knelt down and worship the lord .I praise the lord the God of my master Abraham. Who has led me straight to my master'srelative, where o found his daughter for my masters son .
Now if you intend to fulfill your responsibility towards my master and treat him fairly,please tell me ,if not, say so and I will decide what to do.
Laban and Bethuel answered, since this matter comes from the lord,it is not for us to make a decision."
When Eliezer told his story to Laban, He spoke openly of God and his goodness. Often we do the opposite , afraid that we will be misunderstood , rejected or seen as too religious . instead we should share openly what God is doing in our lives.
We saw commitment on the part of Abraham's servant Eliezer. He was committed to the mission of finding Isaac a good wife.
Rebekah was also committed, when they ask her whether she would want to go with this man , she said, I will go. That is commitment on her part.
ROMANCE IS IMPORTANT IN MARRIAGE
SONG OF SONGS 4 : 9 - 10
"Romance , word of affirmation, and complements are the spices that always keep the marriage love fresh.
MARRIAGE HOLDS TIMES OF GREAT JOY
Jeremiah 7 : 34
" I will bring an end to the sound of joy ,and gladness and to the sound of brides and bridegroom in the town of Judah and street of Jerusalem for the land will become desolate"
The people of Israel were deep into idol worshipping , which made God very angry with them and declare that that he will take away that is in their families.
Proverbs 10:1 ::-" the Proverbs of Solomon, a wise son brings joy to his father , but a foolish son brings grief to his mother"
MARRIAGE CREATES ENVIRONMENT FOR RAISING CHILDREN
Jeremiah 7: 34
" You ask, why?.it is because the lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth.
You have been unfaithful to her , though she is your partner , the wife of your marriage covenant
Has not one God made you? .you belong to him in body. and spirit and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth."
Divorce in this time were practiced by men, they broke faith with their wives ,and ignore the bonding between the husband and wife.
God made the two to become one his purpose for them is to raise qualiry Godly children.
UNFAITHFULNESS BREAKS THE BOND OF TRUST, THE FOUNDATION OF ALL RELATIONSHIPS.
Mathew 5 : 32
" But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife except for sexual immorality, makes her victim of Adultery , and any Ann who marries a divorced woman commits adultery"
Divorce is as hurtful and destructive today as in Jesus' day , God intends marriage for a life time commitments.
When entering marriage people should not consider divorce as an option for solving the problem.
Jesus was attacking those who purposefully abuse marriage contracts .those who discover that their marriage partner is unfaithful should try to::-
1, forgive
2, Reconcile
3, Restore their relationship back.
We are always to look for reasons to restore the marriage relationship rather than for excuse to leave it.
THE PERMANENCE OF MARRIAGE
MATHEW 19 :6
" So Thet Are No Longer Two But One Flesh, Rherefore What Gos Has Join Rogethwr ,Let No Man Put Asunder"
At creation God approves on kind of marriage bond, man to woman and they became one flesh and one before God.
Where Does That Leave The Homosexual Marriage?
At best, it is a human invention without any biblical precedence,God created man a woman(heterosexual and monogamous) this is the plan of God for marriage.
IDEALLY ONLY DEATH SHOULD DISSOLVE MARRIAGE.
ROMANS 7 :2 , 3
" Foe example , a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him.
So the , if she had sexual relation with with another man while he is alive,she is called an adulteress ,but if her husband dies, she is released from the law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man"
Paul uses marriage to illustrate our relationship with the law. When a spouse dies , the law of marriage no longer applies , because we have died with Christ , the law can no longer condemns us, we rose again when Christ was resurrected.
CONCLUSION
MARRIAGE AS A SYMBOL OF CHRIST AND THE CHURCH
Ephesians 5 :23. , 32
" for the husband is the head of the wife wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body of which is the savior"
Paul told wives to submit to their Husbands.
According to the bible, the man is the spiritual head , which involves the wife back oqlesving his leadership and then Christ is the final authority in the House. The bible must always be our reference and guide. Amen.
